What to know about boat waxing and oxidation

What does boat detailing include?

A detail goes beyond a wash and works on the finish itself. On a fiberglass boat that usually means a wash, a compound or polish for a dull finish, then wax or a sealant on top. Many detailers also clean metal, vinyl, canvas, teak and cabins, and some apply ceramic coatings.

Why do sun and salt matter in Florida?

Gel coat is the thin outer layer of most fiberglass boats. Long hours of sun oxidize it, leaving it dull and chalky. Dried salt leaves a film on the hull, glass and fittings, and it can spot metal.

Rinse with fresh water after a day on salt water, and keep wax or polish on the finish to slow the wear. In a BoatUS Magazine test, a treated strip of gel coat still shone after a month's use in sun, rain and a few salt-water splashes. The untreated gel coat beside it was dull.

How often should you detail or wax a boat in Florida?

It depends on the finish, how much sun the boat gets, where it is kept and how often it is washed. BoatUS Magazine's testers wrote that a midseason treatment “is a must” to keep the boat shining into fall. A regular wash between coats keeps dirt and salt from building up.

BoatUS test and midseason advice: “Gelcoat Geek-Out” by Lenny Rudow, BoatUS Magazine, January 2026. The test used do-it-yourself products on one boat.

Checklist

What to have ready when you call

The same list works on the quote form.

  • The boat: length, make and model, and type, such as center console, cruiser, sailboat or pontoon.
  • The hull: fiberglass, aluminum or painted, and its color. Say if the finish looks dull, chalky, stained or scratched.
  • Where the boat is: in a slip, in dry storage, on a trailer or on a lift, and in which town or marina.
  • What you want done, such as a wash, a dull finish brought back, or the metal, canvas or cabin cleaned. Ask which of these the yard does.
  • When it was last waxed or polished, if you know.
  • A wide photo of the boat and a close-up of the finish.
  • When you would like it done.

Ask whether a detail can be lined up with it.

Questions about boat detailing

General answers for any boat in Florida.

How much does it cost to detail a boat?

Detailing prices vary from boat to boat and from one detailer to the next. For a price on yours, call (941) 794-5500 or send the quote form.

Is boat detailing priced by the foot?

Sometimes. Detailers price by the foot, by the hour or by the job. Ask how a detail on your boat would be priced.

Is boat detailing worth it?

A detail can bring back a finish that sun has dulled, and wax slows the next round of wear. Left alone, oxidation gets heavier and harder to remove.

Can oxidation be removed from a boat, or does it need paint?

Light oxidation on sound gel coat may polish out. Thin gel coat may need repair or paint. Send close-ups of the finish and ask which your hull needs.

Can a boat be detailed while it is hauled out for a bottom job?

A haul-out puts the whole hull within reach, so it is a good time to ask whether the topsides can be detailed too. Antifouling bottom paint is not waxed.

Does the boat come to the yard, or does someone come to my dock?

Ask where your boat would be detailed.

How long does it take to detail a boat?

Ask when the work could start and how long it would take.

Should I wax the bottom of my boat?

Not if it has antifouling paint. Wax is for gel coat and painted topsides. A bare gel coat bottom on a boat kept out of the water can be waxed like the sides. If you are not sure which you have, send a photo of the bottom with the quote form.
